INFO:
The first out trans woman elected to congress says she will comply with a new anti-trans bathroom bill. Delaware Congresswoman-elect Sarah McBride took to X to say ‘I’m not here to fight about bathrooms’ ‘Like all members, I will follow the rules’. The bathroom ban was announced by Republican house speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday 20th November, who said in a statement: “All single-sex facilities in the Capitol and House Office Buildings — such as restrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms — are reserved for individuals of that biological sex,” “Women deserve women’s only spaces.” The bill was initially proposed by South Carolina representative Nancy Mace, which prohibited any lawmakers and House employees from using the single-sex bathroom that doesn't correspond with their biological sex at birth. “I wanna make sure no men are in women’s private spaces, and it’s not gonna end here, this shouldn’t be going on on federal property, if you’re a school or an institution that gets government funding”. Given that Sarah McBride is the only out trans congresswomen, many pointed out that the bill directly targeted her. When asked if this was the case, Nancy Mace said: “Yes and absolutely, and then some. You know im not gonna stand, a man with a penis in a women’s locker room, that’s not okay”. Many Democrats have condemned the bill, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez saying this: “And frankly, all it does is allow these Republicans to go around and bully any woman who isn’t wearing a skirt because they think she might not look woman enough”. Sarah McBride hasn’t let the bill deter her from her political goals, going on to say in her X statement: ‘This effort to distract from the real issues facing this country hasn’t distracted me over the last several days, as I’ve remained hard at work preparing to represent the greatest state in the Union come January’
